How can research contribute to reduced food waste?

The Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development (GMV) and Win Win Gothenburg Sustainability Award invite you to a Researchers´ lunch to discuss future collaboration between researchers interested in how reducing food waste can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We have the honor to have this year´s winner of the Win Win Gothenburg Sustainability Award Arash Derambarsh with us at the lunch to give an inspirational talk about how he managed to make the French government pass a law prohibiting French supermarkets and restaurants from throwing away usable food.

Moreover, Kristina Liljestrand, PhD and Project manager at Chalmers Industriteknik will share her knowledge and experience from research about logistics solutions for reducing food waste.

Target 12.3 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development calls for cutting in half per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level, and reducing food losses along production and supply chains (including post-harvest losses) by 2030.

Although an important target in itself, reaching this goal has great potential to contribute towards achieving other goals. Today around a third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted. As stated by the initiative Champions 12.3, reducing food loss can serve as a triple win by saving money, feeding more people and alleviate pressure on climate, water and land resources.
